    Australia - The Movie

I caught Baz Lurman's latest last week.  As you might imagine, there is a massive amount of associated advertising hype around the film here in Oz, with seemingly every possible Aussie wine yard, state, holiday resort, beer,  jumping onto the bandwagon

The film itself is a bit of a let down and it suffers from not really deciding what kind of film it is.  The first hour is more like "Carry on in the outback" with a wide range of Aussie cliche's trotted out - so you get the stubbly outbackers, dead Kangeroos, assorted Fair Dinkum larikins, a cute Aborigine kid, a totaly unconvincing Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman's chest. Then it wanders into Giant (the James Dean film) cattle ranching territory before finally settling on an old fashioned romance and rescue war story.

The production is wonderful through, and the biggest star is Australia herself, all magnificent vistas, red and brown hues, vast skies, and the beauty of the outback shown off to dazzling effect
