Melbournians might say it was Australia’s first city of course, but I think for most, Sydney is still pre-eminent, certainly based on population or fame overseas. 

But Melbourne, what a great city.  Brilliant restaurants, hundreds of cool bars and pubs that stay open until the wee hours, masses of shopping, interesting neighbourhoods and a comprehensive arts scene.  Some splendid architecture too, modern and Victorian. 

Have to say, in terms of atmosphere and going out, it puts Sydney to shame.

The Apple app store prompted me to install the latest Google mobile client for iPhone yesterday.  I wasn't expecting much in the way of feature updates, but lo and behold there is a whole new way of searching included. 

Voice search as might have guessed, simply involves touching the microphone icon next to the search bar, and than talking into the phone. This makes you feel a bit of a twat at first, but quickly becomes second nature. 

Predictably enough, it does not cope too well with difficult names, but for the usual kind of stuff you need when out and about, say “Melbourne restaurants” or “taxi” it works well, and even recognises my name. 

With Google's expertise and dev resources it can’t be too long before this becomes the de facto way to do search on the move, or on devices with restricted keyboard inputs
